Calgary dentists Dr. Sahra Kanji offer a wide range of pediatric dentistry services to address the oral health needs of your children. Our team closely monitors young patients beginning at a very early age to ensure every measure is being taken to build a strong foundation that will enable your children to maintain good oral health for years to come.
Scope of Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric dentistry requires an intimate knowledge of how teeth and gums develop. Careful evaluation of your child’s oral health development, and successful treatment if necessary, can have a very positive influence on jaw growth and total dental wellness. Our philosophy of prevention requires us to act early. Other dental professionals who take the “wait and see” approach may end up ignoring valuable opportunities for important and impactful alignment treatment.
We have a gentle and caring dental team to take care of your children for dental cleanings, dental xrays, exams, fillings, extractions and orthodontic treatment, if required. Your children will feel at ease and will leave excited to return to our office again! TVs in each dental room make the experience an enjoyable one!
We recommend that children are seen for dental checkup as least once before the age of 3 years and should have their first cleaning by the age of 3 years.
A high percentage of children show signs of bite imbalance. Early intervention can have many benefits, including:
- Simplifying and/or shortening dental treatment times
- Harmonizing the width of the dental arches for later corrective orthodontics
- Improving eruption patterns (how adult teeth come in)
- Reducing the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth
- Lowering the risk of trauma to protruded upper incisors
- Improving certain speech problems
- Correcting harmful oral health habits
- Preserving necessary space for erupting permanent teeth
- Improving breathing and airway problems
- Improving aesthetics and self-esteem
Early Orthodontic Treatment
In many cases, Dr. Kanji feel the best time to address orthodontics issues is during the mixed dentition phase, when children have a combination of baby and adult teeth. We recommend you bring your child in for an initial evaluation as early as 5 years old although treatment may or may not begin at that time.
We try to start braces as early as possible, applying the principles of functional orthodontics to ensure effective results. By using oral appliances while teeth are still growing, we are often able to align the upper and lower jaws in order to prevent future TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) issues.
