A tooth crown is used to cover a damaged tooth, restoring its size, shape, strength, and appearance. Your crown will completely encase your damaged tooth above the gum line. It is a very versatile restoration that achieves beautiful, long-lasting results.
You may be an ideal candidate for a tooth crown if you need to:
- Repair a cracked tooth
- Cover or improve the appearance of a misshapen tooth
- Restore a broken tooth that has suffered severe wear
- Cover a tooth with a large filling if there is only a small amount of natural tooth structure remaining
- Create a prosthetic tooth to cover a dental implant
- Hold a dental bridge in place
Calgary dentists Dr. Sahra Kanji use porcelain crowns almost exclusively because they have found that they deliver the best results.
Your Tooth Crown Procedure
Dr. Kanji work with Aurum lab for all tooth crown work. Aurum is a local lab based in Calgary, and they consistently deliver exceptional results with their crowns.
At the end of your initial visit, Dr. Kanji will place a temporary crown on your tooth while your permanent one is being constructed. Once your crown has been crafted at the lab, you will return to our office to have it placed. Dr. Ali will remove your temporary crown and bond your permanent crown to your tooth using a strong dental adhesive.
Caring for your Tooth Crown
When properly cared for, your tooth crown can last a very long time. The best way to care for your crown is to maintain good oral hygiene practices such as brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. This will prevent plaque from accumulating in the region where your tooth crown meets your gums.
You should avoid chewing hard foods, since this may damage your tooth crown. Grinding your teeth can also substantially impact how long your restoration will last. If you regularly grind your teeth, Dr. Kanji may recommend a neuromuscular evaluation to determine the cause of your grinding.
