Porcelain veneers are the most powerful procedure in cosmetic dentistry for improving the appearance of a discoloured, crooked, worn, or damaged smile. Porcelain veneers can improve the colour, size, and shape of teeth to give you a custom-designed smile that conveys the effect you desire. They can be subtle or dramatic–it’s up to you.
This page contains some background information on the potential cosmetic benefits of porcelain veneers, but the best way to learn how they can help you is to schedule a consultation with a dentist. Covering Discoloured Teeth
Porcelain veneers are capable of concealing discoloured teeth. Because porcelain veneers replace the entire visible surface of a tooth, your smile can be made any shade you desire, but most often the effort is made to match the whitest shade obtainable in your natural teeth. Porcelain veneers can be used to cover a generally stained smile or to match a single discoloured tooth with the rest of your teeth.
Sometimes the colour of your teeth is due to chemical changes in the enamel or thinning of the enamel with age, which allows the dentin inside the tooth to show through, which may make your teeth look yellow, brown, or grey. Teeth that are discoloured in this way do not respond well to chemical teeth whitening, and porcelain veneers may be the only way to achieve the shade you desire.
In addition to the degree of whitening, a benefit of whitening with porcelain veneers is longevity. If your teeth have become stained by food, drink, or smoking, whitening results may last only a few months or less. Porcelain veneers, though, are resistant to this type of staining. If properly cared for, they should be able to maintain their whiteness for ten years or more.
Porcelain veneers are capable of reshaping your teeth if you are unhappy with the shape or size of your teeth. If, for example, you have a tooth that was damaged or never developed, it can be built up to match your other teeth. Porcelain veneers can also be used to lengthen teeth that have been worn down.
Porcelain veneers can also be used to correct crooked front teeth. This is often called “instant orthodontics,” because it achieves a straighter smile in a few weeks as opposed to a year or more with traditional orthodontics, but it does not move the tooth roots, which makes it a good option for some people, but not for others.
Porcelain veneers allow you to select a style for your smile. Different teeth shapes and proportions convey different messages on a subconscious level. You can make your smile look more youthful, aggressive, masculine, or friendly–there are hundreds of subtle effects possible, another of the cosmetic benefits of porcelain veneers.
What Porcelain Veneers Cannot Accomplish
Although powerful, porcelain veneers are not a cure-all. They are not a good solution for teeth that have been weakened by decay. Dental crowns are generally used for this purpose.
Although porcelain veneers can cosmetically straighten teeth, they cannot correct bite imbalance created by crooked molars or jaw misalignment. In fact, porcelain veneers are likely to fail when placed in a mouth with severe bite issues.
There are other situations in which porcelain veneers may not be the right choice. The only way to know if they are right for you is with a dental consultation.
